Vetralla – a hidden gem just north of Rome in Lazio.
Vetralla combines the best of both worlds – rural beauty and serenity with stunning historical sites within easy reach. Alessandra’s home is set in a lovely quiet rural street within walking distance of the historic village of Cura.
If you like nature, there is a magnificent forest close by where you can walk in stunning beauty of laneways through corridors of giant trees – with carpets of flowers in spring and summer.Vetralla is a medieval village that offers a genuine ‘Italian’ experience of old streets and shops, bars and local restaurants – but you may well be the only tourist there! You will be from the hustle and bustle of Rome - this is where you find the ‘real’ Italy.
Central to some of Italy’s finest attractions
Vetralla is in central Italy (Lazio) between Tuscany and Rome. It is close to some of Italy’s finest attractions – but they tend to be off the beaten track so you may well be the only ‘tourist’ visiting them. Guided tours are available for these sites (at an extra reasonable cost) or you can visit independently if you hire your own car.
Rome
As well as these offerings Rome is within easy reach by train, and you can do a day trip from Alessandra’s home, see some of the wonderful sights that will delight and amaze you in Rome, and get back home on the train, tired but very happy.
Bagnoregio
Many people claim is the loveliest medieval town in all Italy
Sutri
A beautiful quiet village that has Etruscan origins as well as Roman structures. You can see a breathtaking ‘underground’ church first carved out of the stone by the local Romans before being taken over as a medieval Christian church
Farnese Palace in Caprarola
The breathtaking villa built by the vastly powerful Farnese family as their summer getaway.
Villa Lante
Probably the most stunning garden in Italy built by the Popes to showcase the ‘journey of civilization’ as the garden cascades one kilometre down a slope, in various stages each level having a special architectural significance.
The Etruscan Forest
A secluded valley containing ancient Etruscan and Roman aqueducts, dams and an ancient grinding mill – all in an enchanted deep forest. Very few people go here or even know about it.
